AI in Project Management: What Has Changed Since Our 2025 Predictions?
In July 2025, we published an article titled “5 Ways AI Will Transform Project Management in 2025.” At the time, many organisations were still exploring how AI could fit into their project management offices (PMOs), delivery teams, and strategic planning processes.
Just a few months later, the conversation has changed significantly. AI is no longer a future capability that organisations are evaluating—it is increasingly becoming part of day-to-day project execution.
So, what has changed since our original predictions?
1. AI Has Moved from Experimentation to Adoption
Earlier in 2025, many organisations were running pilot projects and proof-of-concepts. Today, project teams are actively using AI tools to generate project plans, create status reports, analyse risks, and automate administrative work.
The question has shifted from “Should we use AI?” to “How do we use AI effectively and responsibly?”
Project managers who embrace AI are finding they can spend less time on administration and more time on stakeholder engagement, decision-making, and leadership.
2. Predictive Project Analytics Are Becoming Practical
One of our predictions was that AI would provide predictive insights into project performance. We are now seeing this become a reality.
Modern AI platforms can identify patterns in project data and provide early warnings about:
- Schedule slippage
- Resource constraints
- Budget overruns
- Delivery risks
- Stakeholder issues
While these predictions are not perfect, they are becoming increasingly accurate and valuable for proactive project management.
3. Generative AI Has Become the New Project Assistant
Perhaps the biggest surprise has been the rapid adoption of generative AI.
Project managers are now using AI assistants to:
- Draft project charters
- Create meeting agendas
- Generate status reports
- Summarise workshop outcomes
- Develop communication plans
- Produce risk registers
Tasks that previously required hours can now often be completed in minutes.
The result is not the replacement of project managers, but the augmentation of their capabilities.
4. Governance Has Become a Priority
As AI adoption has increased, organisations have realised that governance cannot be an afterthought.
Key concerns now include:
- Data privacy
- Regulatory compliance
- Information security
- AI-generated inaccuracies
- Ethical use of AI
Leading organisations are establishing AI governance frameworks that define how AI can be used within projects while maintaining accountability and control.
For PMOs, governance is becoming just as important as innovation.
5. The Skills Required of Project Managers Are Evolving
Technical project management skills remain important, but the most successful project leaders are developing new capabilities:
- AI literacy
- Critical thinking
- Data interpretation
- Strategic decision-making
- Change leadership
As AI automates routine activities, human skills become even more valuable.
The project manager of the future will not compete with AI—they will learn how to leverage it effectively.
Looking Ahead
Our original prediction was that AI would transform project management. The evidence today suggests that transformation is already underway.
The organisations gaining the greatest benefit are not necessarily those with the most advanced technology. They are the ones that are combining AI capabilities with strong governance, skilled leadership, and a clear focus on business outcomes.
The next challenge for project leaders is no longer understanding what AI can do. It is understanding how to integrate AI into project delivery in a way that creates sustainable value.
